Audrey Backeberg, who vanished in 1962, found alive in 2025.

In a plot twist straight outta a Netflix doc, 20-year-old Audrey Backeberg dipped outta Reedsburg, Wisconsin, in 1962 and reappeared in 2025 like, “Surprise!”

The Great Disappearing Act

Back in July ’62, Audrey told her fam she was off to grab her paycheck. She never came back. Rumors flew: Did she run off? Get snatched? Go full spy mode? Turns out, she just… left. No foul play, no abduction—just a woman who decided she’d had enough.

Detective Isaac Hanson reopened the cold case in 2025. Using Ancestry.com and some old-school detective work, he tracked her down. She was alive, well, and living under a new name with a new husband. When contacted, Audrey was chill about it, saying she had no regrets. She’d built a new life and was content.

Why She Left

Audrey’s marriage was reportedly troubled. She had filed a criminal complaint against her husband, alleging abuse and threats. Just days before she vanished, she claimed he loaded guns and threatened to kill her. Faced with danger, she chose to disappear.

The Aftermath

In the decades she was gone, Audrey didn’t contact her family. Her mother passed away in 2023, and one of her children died in 2006. Her husband was investigated but passed a polygraph test and was never charged.

Detective Hanson emphasized that Audrey’s disappearance was her choice. She wasn’t hiding; she was surviving. Now, at 82, she’s living her life on her terms.

Thoughts: She pulled the longest coffee run ever—left in ’62, came back in ’25. That’s commitment.
